Wild Experiences

2/8/16 Today is basically a flying day but right now we are in a layover, and we are in Johannesburg S. Africa.  In 1948 there was apartheid in S. Africa much like the segregation in the U.S, just 1000 times worse.  We got to see the apartheid museum and we got to see Nelson Mandela’s house, he was a freedom fighter against the government during apartheid.  He was put in prison for 28 years for fighting back.  While he was in prison he was not allowed to attend his daughter’s funeral or his mothers funeral.  I think the government was stupid by making apartheid a law, it really brought in a lot of fear to S. Africa.

2/13/16 We were making dinner and I had the best job, to warn off the jackals (The raccoons of Africa) by throwing rocks at them.  The jackals were trying to steal our food.  I think it helped me with my pitching, I thought I had pretty good aim.

2/14/16 We have only been in Africa 6 nights and it is already my favorite place we have been so far. We have seen just about all of the animals you can think of from elephants to tree squirrels. We have already seen 7 cheetahs, which is pretty AMAZING! We went camping which is something I’ve wanted to do this whole trip, Which I think is AWESOME!!! Because it’s not every day you go camping in Africa. We have the coolest way of camping, we have tents on top of our car. I saw the cutest animal known to man, the honey badger. When we were driving around looking for animals we almost ran over a giraffe.  OOPS!!

2/15/16 We started heading to Swakopmund where we are going sandboarding in the oldest desert in the world, the Namib desert.   We are going sandboarding to make up for not being able to sled in snow at home.

2/16/16 We finally did it, we went sandboarding and I don’t think that anything can top this experience.  I have been waiting almost 6 months for sandboarding and it definitely lived up to it’s name.  I honestly think sandboarding is better than sledding for three reasons.  First it is a lot warmer so you can do it for longer periods without freezing.  Secondly it is sooooo much faster, one of my runs I hit 38 mph.  Thirdly the sand naturally forms so you can find super tall hills of sand.  For me Africa has been the heart and soul of this trip I don’t think this trip would be as fun as it is if we didn’t go to Africa.

And for today’s weather announcements the Namib desert’s sand still setting the bar high 158 degrees. ^ [in weather man accent].

Hi Liam! WOW, you are an amazing writer! So fun to read your words! (we’ve been gone for about 5 weeks so I’m just now catching up on your blogs) -Sandboarding sounds like SOooo much fun, even better than spring skiing!! “Right on” explaining how government can create fear by stupid laws. I hope to see you pitch someday, now that you have more experience, haha! Love,Cuz Cathy
