Himalayan Trek
The only way to find your limits is to push them.
On our first day of trekking I got a reality check, I realized how long a kilometer actually is. Our first day of trekking we walked 10 kilometers, and it took way longer than I thought it would. I thought it would take about 45 minutes but it took more like 4 hours. The first day of the trek kept on getting better (not!), by the time we reached the top of the twisty hill it was pouring rain. On that same day we found out that our rain jackets were not actually waterproof. After being absolutely soaked we continued on our adventure over hills and through mud up thousands of feet. On our trek I felt so at home. It was so comforting to see rocky hill sides for the first time in 4 months.
The thing I was most excited for was seeing Everest, and knowing I had a chance my head was spinning back and forth looking. We did not have the greatest chance at seeing Everest because it was extremely far away and there was a lot of cloud cover, but it was worth the look. The third tallest mountain in the world is named Kanchendzonga at 28,156 feet! We had an even better chance at seeing this mountain, because it was much closer. The first time we got a good look at Kanchendzonga was at the summit of Sandakphu.
On our fourth day of trekking we had to walk 21 kms, it was a very painful walk. On that day of trekking we were hoping to see Everest and Kanchendzonga. Our guide told us the walk was supposed to be flat, but a lot of it was uphill. The whole hike took over 6 hours. The whole time we were doing our hike I felt like I was in the Hobbit. The landscape was super green and it had a bunch of hills everywhere. That hike was by far my favorite one because I loved pushing my limits and absolutely loved the views. But once we got to our place there were no lights and the bathrooms absolutely sucked. It was the worst place we stayed at. The fifth morning was our last chance at seeing Everest and when we woke up you couldn’t see 20 feet so we never got to see Everest. I was super disappointed but the whole trek was still worth it.
Another thing we experienced was the completely drastic weather. For example one minute you could be drenched in water then the next you could be sunburned. Do you know the saying about Colorado, “if you don’t like the weather then just wait 5 minutes”. Well that saying is very true here, the weather can change in minutes. I absolutely loved this experience it made me feel so much at home. The trek has probably been my favorite experience in Asia. By the end of the trek we ended up walking 85 km or 51 miles. I thought it was crazy when I heard we walked that far.

Hi Liam, Thank you for posting! I keep reading all of them and some several times over!. Just love that you like pushing your limits on your trek. Does this mean you are going to run up all the Colorado 14 hrs? I’m sorry you came close enough but didn’t get to see Everest. Maybe that means you’ll have to go back!? It’s nice to read that you felt at home, but I think you are too tall to be a hobbit! Love, Cathy
