From food to frogs
La Paloma was a very good choice for our first stop, despite the 24 hours of travel it took to get there. It has a very different culture, which showed us some things we will be seeing around the world, and very nice people to show us the way.
Did you know Uruguayans eat at around 8:00? I guess that works for me because I’m hungry at that time and I’m actually eating food. Foreign food was my main concern. I rarely ever actually like food, normally I’ll eat it, but I barely ever enjoy it. However, Uruguayan food is way better than the food in the USA, even their fast food! My favorite was the Peaches with Creme I had at a restaurant, or Durazno con Crema as it said on the menu. It sounds much fancier than it actually is, it’s just canned peaches with whipped cream. In fact, we just made some before I began writing.
I also love how close we are are to the beaches, we could easily walk to 6 different beaches! It has soft sand and a nice breeze most of the time, the waves are also pretty perfect. We took a surfing lesson too, I got up about 4 times but never rode the wave for more than 2 seconds. I was going to boogie board afterward, but I was too exhausted from being bullied by the water.
The animals here crack me up! There are frogs that honestly sound like octopus suction cups attaching and detaching, and other frogs that sound like they’re saying mlaaagaaaa (audio below).
There was also a parrot we saw fly across the street on one of our first days here. The wildlife here is pretty cool, not like Costa Rica where there were monkey’s jumping off of our roof, but cool. There are also dogs everywhere you look, the people who own the guest house have a dog. He loves to come and visit us and “protect us”, he comes to the door and waits for me to come out.
Overall, I’m going to be sad to leave Uruguay and all of the kind people here. But I know that the other places we will visit will be just as great, plus more great experiences.
