Departure – Six Months Out

We are six months out from heading on the road and in my free time I find it hard to think about much else.  Mostly I keep focused on what I need to do before we go since I know how fast six months can fly by!  Here is a taste of what we are working on:

  • Making reservations in our first few countries where we are going at peak season and we are learning that airBnB seems to be more affordable than hostels!  Interesting.  I am curious how that will feel.  Being alone in an apartment doesn’t provide the traveler community that we love, but the ruckus will be our own and a kitchen will be great.
  • Organizing information about all the stuff that needs to happen on the homefront while we are gone for whomever is helping us out.
  • Working twice as hard at work so get things nice and tidy for our sabbaticals.  Looks like both of our jobs will be waiting for us when we return, so I guess paying our due before we leave is fair.
  • Figuring out what electronics and backpacks get invited on the trip.  We just got a new mirrorless Olympus EM-10 camera.  Now we are learning how to use it.  FUN!
  • We’ve booked our first two major flights.  The rest we will book on the road.  We want more flexibility than a RTW ticket would give us so we will piece it all together on the fly.
  • And for fun we keep exploring different areas on our radar.  We are trying to balance some advance planning with making decisions on the fly so we don’t spend our whole trip planning our trip.  The internet didn’t inform our decisions at all last time, this is a whole new ballgame!
